Obviously the first thing you want to do is take the handgun apart and lay the pieces out very neatly and orderly so that will make cleaning the pieces and re-assembly that much easier. Remove the 1911 grips from the pistol so you can clean in and around them and get to the backing plate of the 1911 grips as well. Frequent and consistent cleaning regimen will make sure that you prolong the life of your pistol and that is in perfect working condition when you need it.

Cleaning a 1911 Handgun Part I

When you do actually start cleaning the 1911 you will want to have an assortment of brushes and wipes as well as gun lube to clean the parts up. A basic gun cleaning kit can be bought online at Ebay or even Wal-Mart if you prefer to shop locally.

If you have a variety of handguns then you might need a fairly elaborate kit but a 1911 handgun can be cleaned with just a few basic brushes and some cleaning supplies and wipes. You can start small and then as your collection grows then you can easily add to your cleaning supplies.

Cleaning the 1911 is a piece of cake.

Part II Cleaning a 1911 Handgun

Once you start re-assembling the handgun just make sure that you take it slowly and that you do not force anything to go together. If a screw won't start on it's own and let you thread it in by hand for at least a few revolutions of the thread then stop and back up. Start over again.

If you take it slow, follow the video and put everything back together in reverse order then you will quickly find that cleaning your 1911 handgun is a piece of cake.

1911 Pistol grips serve much more purpose than most people give them credit for serving.  1911 grips are an integral part of the handgun and a lot of thought should be given to which grips are going to adorn your gun.   Different people will change their 1911 grips for different reasons but the most obvious reason is the aesthetic appeal.  A great looking 1911 with a sexy pair of custom 1911 grips is definitely an attractive package, no question.  It might be vain but quite honestly, most handgun owners want them to be attractive as well as functional.

You can also get 1911 grips that provide what is known as a "tactical" version which offers a mixed combination of knurling and a smooth texture.  Kind of a half and half version of a smooth and textured version of the 1911 grips.  Rubber 1911 grips are an option, aluminum 1911 grips in smooth and textured patterns are availalbe.  You can even get Carbon Fiber 1911 grips if you so choose....the options are almost endless.  Heck you can even get Ivory 1911 grips for your handgun....all it takes is a bit of time and money to find the perfect pair of grips for your handgun.

1911 Grip Function

In addition to an improved grip in your hand, the right 1911 grip can also do a lot more for you in regards to proper function.  1911 grips come in different thicknesses and you can semi-custom fit your 1911 to your own hand with either a thinner set of 1911 grips or a thicker pair of 1911 grips.

A thicker set of 1911 grips will make the handgun feel better to someone who has a big hand, while the thinner 1911 grips will help the shooter that has smaller hands for that size handgun.  Proper fit in your palm is definitely critical to the function of the gun.  If it's too big or too small in your hand then it won't be comfortable to shoot.

What is Cocobolo

If you aren't familiar with what Cocobolo is then you probably aren't alone but I am almost sure that you have admired a pair of these grips on a 1911 or similar handgun in the past. You probably mistook the wood for something else. Cocobolo is a very rich hardwood from the jungles of South America and it's known for it's beauty and durability.

Cocobolo is an offshoot of the Rosewood line, of which you may be more familiar. Like the Rosewoods, Cocobolo emits an aroma similar to that of a rose when it is first cut and sometimes even after harvesting it will retain a mild yet pleasant odor. As I said before, Cocobolo is usually a rich orange in color that often drifts more towards red. It will often develop some unique and interesting color patterns after being cut, with streaks of black and dark browns appearing throughout. Most 1911 grip afficionados would agree that the grain patters are very attractive which accounts for it's widespread popularity.

Cocobolo wood is in high demand for gun or knife handles when both aesthetic appearance and great durability are important. Cocobolo trees are an endangered species worldwide and most examples that you will find for 1911 grips will have come from tree farms. Even though cocobolo is being grown in tree farms, it is still in very high demand and prices remain high.

1911 Function test
