The main reasons for different grips are comfort and aimability. There's also a certain element of style if you get the right kind of grips, and some people choose their style based purely on looks. Also, smooth isn't any better than checkered for IWB carry. The "checkering" (stippling, actually) does help with some people, especially those that has sweatier palms. I still have the stock grips on my RIA 1911, if it helps any. I'd like to get something a little bit bigger, maybe something that makes it feel like a double stack, which fits my large hands better.
